Ichijodani Asakura Clan Historic Ruins
The Rediscovered Home of the Powerful Asakura Clan
The Ichijodani Asakura Clan Historic Ruins were once a castle town during the Warring States period (1467–1568). Starting in 1967, excavations rediscovered the layout of the town, including the home of the feudal lord, samurai residences, temples, and houses of merchants and artisans. Some samurai residences and merchants' quarters have been rebuilt along a 200-meter-long stretch of road. Four Japanese gardens have also been discovered and partially restored.
For over 100 years, this town and Ichijodani Castle served as the base of the Asakura clan, the warlords who ruled the region, until their defeat. The ruins of the castle are on top of a nearby hill, which offers a scenic view of the area.
The Ichijo River flows through the site, and there are colorful koi carp in the clear river water. In late March and early April, the site is a favorite place for families to see the cherry blossoms.
