Ichijo Falls
A Refreshing Waterfall Where a Sword Expert Once Trained
Ichijo Falls is located at the foot of a mountain, in the outskirts of Fukui City. The falling water keeps the surrounding plants green all year round. In summer, Ichijo Falls serves as a place to cool off in the spray of the falling water, and in autumn, it is surrounded by vivid red leaves.
According to legend, the prominent swordsman Sasaki Kojiro (c. 1575–1612) trained here. It is said that this was where he invented his signature double-cut sword technique, the tsubame-gaeshi (lit. “swallow-turnaround”). There is a statue of Kojiro nearby, in honor of this legend.
This waterfall is in the upstream portion of the Ichijo River, which runs through the nearby Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins. The nearby Ichijo Falls Kojiro no Sato Park offers open space and tents for recreation, and grills for cooking.
