Mikuni Shrine
A Quiet Shrine That Grew in a Prospering Port Town
Mikuni Jinja Shrine is a large, quiet shrine in the port town of Mikuni. Some of the shrine’s most iconic features date back to when Mikuni was a major port town. The shrine’s copper-topped torii gate and the statues in the large, elaborate Zuijin Gate were donated by wealthy local merchants. There are also huge old trees that grow on the shrine grounds, with some as much as 600 years old.
Each year, for the three days starting on May 19, the shrine hosts the Mikuni Festival. This 300-year-old event features decorated floats six meters tall, that parade through town.
