Sotomo
Natural Arches and Dramatic Scenery Carved by the Waves
Sotomo is a scenic six-kilometer stretch of coastline, on a peninsula between the placid Obama Bay to the south and the larger Wakasa Bay to the north. This coastline is lined with dramatic rock formations and sharp cliffs. The most iconic sights include rocks with shapes reminiscent of the Moai of Easter Island, a waterfall that runs into the bay, and a pair of natural arches that pass through the rock entirely.
For a closer look at the rocky coastal scenery from a different angle, visitors can take a ride on a pleasure boat. The cruise route goes out to the end of the peninsula, then turns around. Pleasure boats run daily and depart several times per day (except in December, January, and February) from Wakasa Fisherman’s Wharf. Cruises take about 50 minutes, and tickets are available for sale until three minutes before departure time.
