Tojinbo Cliffs
Dramatic Stone Cliffs along the Sea of Japan
The Tojinbo Cliffs are a kilometer-long stretch of the coastline of northern Fukui. These tall cliffs are made up of countless natural columns of stone created 12 to 13 million years ago by volcanic activity—a rare phenomenon found in only two other places worldwide. Over many centuries, the harsh waves of the Sea of Japan have carved out these stones. Today, the shoreline is lined with deep valleys, pools of water, and cliffs as much as 30 meters tall.
Visitors can walk around and climb on these rocky cliffs, and take half-hour sightseeing boat rides in the morning and early afternoon. These rides offer a close-up view of natural rock formations with unique shapes, like Lion Rock and Candle Rock.
On the other hand, Tojinbo Tower offers visitors a much higher vantage point, for bird’s-eye views of not only the Tojinbo Cliffs, but Oshima Island to the northwest, and Mt. Hakusan to the east.
